A Plan In Place

We thought we’d write a post to introduce you to our blog and give you a sense of what we’re doing. We don’t really know what we’re getting ourselves into but we have pieced together some plane tickets, a hotel reservation and an agreement to volunteer our time for about 2 months at a fancy, off-the-grid guesthouse/artist retreat in the mountains of southern Spain, about 100 miles east of Granada. We are set to arrive in Madrid via Moscow around midnight on February 7th. We’ll navigate the metro to our hotel and should have about a day and half to walk around Madrid before heading south by bus to the town of Velez Rubio. We’ll get picked up in Velez Rubio by our hosts on the afternoon of the 10th and will commence our stay at the guesthouse.

Check out the retreat’s website for a better idea of where we will be: Cortijada Los Gazquez. We have been told our work may include collecting firewood from the surrounding forest, maintenance projects and housekeeping. Austin is most excited about the opportunity to rebuild stone walls on the property and David is hoping to have some time in the kitchen over a wood-burning stove and hopefully learn more about permaculture ecology.

We hope you’ll follow our blog and see what we’re up to. We will be posting updates, pictures and videos along the way and we hope this blog will be a way to stay in contact while we’re away. We’d really love to hear from you!

Thank you for the goodbye message though; I will hang onto it and treasure it for a while. I hope you and David have safe and smooth travels. I don’t have to tell you to keep it interesting, you seem to do that naturally, but be well and enjoy your journey. I look so foward to reading about your experiences on here!
